MLA Producer Demonstration Sites

The Monaro is traditionally a breeding area with the short growing season induced by cold winter temperatures limiting pasture growth for many months of the year.  This unique climate has made it challenging for producers to meet target weights and finish off spring-born stock over the summer / autumn period without specialist summer forages or supplementary feeding.  A large portion of the Monaro landscape is dominated by native pasture species which do not provide sufficiently high feed quality to enable young stock to reach the target weight and condition required for slaughter.

MFS has recently invested in Grassgro modelling work which has quantified the profitability ($/ha) of retaining store cross bred lambs and steers on various pasture and crop systems and in all cases retaining lambs and steers appreciably increased farm profitability.  The modelling suggested considerable scope for improved farm profitability via these finishing systems.
