Monaro Summer Worm Risk Outlook 2023
Uncharacteristically high worm pressure throughout winter has led to more high WEC’s throughout spring 2023. The average WEC in the Monaro this spring is 653epg, which is 271epg higher than the long-term average for Spring (2016-2022). On average there is 45% Barbers Pole (max. 86%), 24% Small Brown Stomach Worm and 29% Scour Worm. Summer storms (if they occur) are likely to increase worm egg development allowing worm populations to increase quickly. All sheep should be tested for worms every 4 weeks through a Paraboss accredited lab. Effective drenching is essential. Preventative worm control strategies will slow the rate of reinfection and reduce reliance on drench.
